Question: Taking off your shoes?
For those who are unfamiliar with Asian culture, it is disrespectful to walk around someone's house with your shoes off. Since I was taught that growing up, it's a habit for me to take off my shoes before entering a house regardless if the family is Asian or not. For those who are Asian, do you also do this when entering a house regardless if the family is Asian or not? For those who aren't Asian and or do not practice this, what are your opinions?

I do it. A person must always assume their shoes are dirty and that it is rude to bring it inside peoples homes.
ReplyDeleteI do it and act like i am doing it till they say something, for me its just a sign of respect towards the family living in the house
ReplyDeleteI do this. Growing up I got used to my parents or aunts and uncles telling me to take off my shoes whenever I walked in a house. I guess it's just a way to show your respect for someone living in the house.
ReplyDeleteWhenever I step foot into a house, I ask whether or not I should take off my shoes. But when I step into my relative's or family member's house, I usually take off my shoes out of respect.
ReplyDeleteIt's become a habit for me to take off my shoes when I go to someone else's house since that's what I was taught growing up. It's almost become natural. I've done it a couple of times at a non-Asian household, and it was awkward for me when they told me that I could put my shoes back on.
ReplyDeleteI was raised to take off your shoes because its respectful. And i guess it makes the house dirty if you do wear your shoes outside then bring them in. I usually take off my shoes when i go to someone else house and they either are happy i do or ask why am i taking my shoes.
ReplyDeleteI take my shoes off not out of culture, but out of respect for someones home. I totally agree with Sheila about assuming one's shoes are dirty.
ReplyDeletei guess it is an asian thing to do but i only did it because my mom didnt want the house to be dirty. but when going to a different house such as mexican i always tend to take off my shoes but they tell me its okay. so it felt weird having my shoes on inside a house.
ReplyDeleteI do take off my shoes when coming home. When at someones else house I always ask just to make sure. If they were shoes I would too just in case. Its their home after all and I respect that.
ReplyDeleteI usually always take off my shoes, even if the house belongs to non-asians. Some households will tell me to leave my shoes on, others will offer indoor-only slippers. Most households with non-carpet floors usually have me keep my shoes on because the floor is cold.
