From Sheila Ramos: Should illegal immigrants who contribute to society be deported?

  1. No. Government should implement Amnesty which give illegal immigrant a chance to get their green cards if they have clean records. For instance, in our reading about Jose Vargas, he proved that there are lots of illegal immigrants who have lots of potential to make a great impact in our society.

  2. It's hard to answer because the question is then "What counts as contribution to society?" Someone could argue that the person who cleans up the restaurant after everyone leaves is also contributing to society. If you mean someone who is contributing to society in a more influential way (higher position) we would also have to find a way to gauge that influence to make it fair. Also, for the person to have gotten to that higher position, they would've had to lie about their status many times probably.

But yeah, I think that there should be a higher leniency and more support resources for illegal immigrants than exists right now.

  3. It's like saying a stranger suddenly walks into your house without asking, but does all your dishes, cooking, cleaning, etc. so you should let him/her stay... In my opinion, if they weren't welcomed in the first place, I say they should go back to where they came from.

  4. No
because, I think that they will be fine as long as they still contribute and they give good impacts.

  5. It's tough but there is always a proper procedure that supposed to be done. I think Department of immigration should give them a chance to apply for the right document in order to be legal in this country. Unless, those immigrant significantly harm other then send them away please...

  6. I agree with Jennifer it would be hard to answer this question because you have to think about, what counts as contribution to society? People could say that someone who works at McDonald’s doesn't have that much standing compared to someone who say has a higher standing job like a teacher. Most likely people would rather have the person who works at McDonald's deported rather than a teacher.
But if you work hard and try and get a green card I don't see the problem with them staying just become a citizen.

  7. Jennifer has brought a great point. It is a matter of opinion on what is contribution. That would be like saying should all illegal immigrants be deported.

  8. depends on how they are contributing to society, in a good way then maybe not, but in a bad way they should get the boot. (in a nice way)

  9. I think that if an illegal immigrant is contributing and working just as hard as his co-workers then there would be no point to deport him/her. He is giving back to society by paying his fair share of taxes and putting money back into the market.

  10. There's many immigrants who contribute to our society but aren't noticed. I believe that deporting immigrants is fair but for those who are noticed shouldn't.

  11. I've come to know that if a policy isn't enforced strictly enough, it basically doesn't exist at all. If illegal immigrants (who don't have papers and don't pay taxes, etc) are allowed to stay in this country at all, it is an insult to the people who lined up and worked through proper procedures to be approved to live in this country.
