Racial stereotypes

Is it okay to laugh at comedy based on racial stereotypes if it is funny?

  2. For me its ok.This kind of entertainment is just one of the ways of expressing and coping with racial differences that do not conform to the confrontational form of racism commonly seen pre-civil rights era. For instance, many stand-up comedians use sarcasm in creating jokes that all too often stereotype races by means of commonly held believes about people. Such form of expression is in most cases dismissed as provocative entertainment rather than a direct threat towards a racial group.

  3. Since it is a comedy based act, i think its perfectly fine. People are coming for entertainment with open minds.

  4. I think its okay. Its entertainment and something that is just for fun, most people come with open minds when they watch comedy. As long as you respect everyone in actual life I really don't think its a problem. We all need a good laugh every once in a while and sometimes the funniest things are focused on racial stereotypes. There is no real harm in comedy.

  5. I do think it's okay to a certain extent. I think that people for the most part can tell the difference between racial humor and racism. If you take a look at someone like Dave Chappelle and Russell Peters and compare them to Esther Ku, you can clearly see the difference. They're just trying to make light of the matter of race because in our day to day lives it seems to be very apparent. Also, being that we live in an area that is diverse and full of different races it's something we can understand and be able to laugh about.

  7. Yes i think that if you're confident enough to laugh along with it, your telling other people that it's not true.

I think that most people can tell when someone is simply making light of stereotypes or ethnicity. But it's different when it's racism because it's done with an intent to demean someone. In Esther Ku's example, it may not have been totally racist... but it wasn't that funny either. Honestly though, I wonder if that's just cause she's not funny.

Anyway, I think it's fine to laugh but also, we need to recognize when someone is making fun in order to make light as opposed to making fun with the intent to hurt or demean someone's value.

  9. Yes, because if it is funny I don't think theres any point of trying to pretend not to laugh. I agree that its also entertainment nowadays so to me its okay as long as they don't go way too far

  10. Yes, it's not fun if you can't make fun of yourself. It does vary as to who is saying what though.

  11. It's meant to be funny in comedy, so I'd say yes for this one. If it's not funny, likely if stereotypes are used offensively, then it's not a comedy and we won't be laughing about it.

  12. I think it's okay. It is because it is just an entertainment for people.

  13. I think it's okay. There are a lot of people (ex. YouTubers) who make fun of different races along with themselves. I just think people shouldn't take it so personally.

  14. yes, it's comedy. Those kind of jokes are for people that typically don't get easily offended. For me it's okay because a lot of racial jokes are based on TRUE stereotypes.
