At home my family speaks Ilocano and Tagalog, however throughout the years I have forgotten how to speak those languages. The first language i learned was English. Hello, I'm Powell. I was born in China but moved to Japan at age 2 because my dad got a job, and lived with rather little resources. Moved to America at age 7 for various (some unknown) reasons and got my Japanese citizenship then, so that's why I had a Japanese name. With both too much and too little culture in me at a young age, I grew up a life not getting any of it and devoted myself to studying and talking about other things. I want to take this opportunity to see how others discovered their identity and heritage and study my own. I am a student at UC Berkeley now living in San Jose due to health reasons.

Hello, My name is Matthew, but Matt is fine. I was born in San Jose, and I'm Filipino. As a kid I used to speak Tagalog, the one of the common dialects in the Philippines, but as I started going to school, I started to speak it less and less. I can still understand it somewhat, since my parents still speak to me in Tagalog. For my first year of college I went to SJSU, but then my parents wanted me to start paying for my own school, and seeing as i had no job or source of income i started going to De Anza. This will be my second year at De Anza, and I hope that I can make acquaintances throughout this course!
